I was checking out the Electro Flo 5000 Airway Clearance Device (or Flutter, Therapy Vest, Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilator, chest percussor, vibrator, oscillator, chest physical therapy, etc). It seems like it would help with chest percussion that we are doing manually when XXX is sick. What are your thoughts? She finds manual chest percussion gives her some relief when she is in respiratory distress.

All of these airway vibration methods can be helpful when people are sick, but they are not helpful when people are well because they assist the lower airways to carry debris up to the upper airways, so that the debris can be coughed out. People with weak respiratory muscles do not have airways disease or need to assist the normal hairs (cilia) that bring up debris, but they need assistance coughing which these methods to not provide. Companies market vibration devices saying that if you use them you will not get sick. There is no evidence nor reason to think this. It can be helpful to have access to them for when patients are ill with airway secretions at which point a good home care company should provide them for rental.
