No one has ever shown that tracheostomy improves the long-term survival prognosis better than NVS for any diagnosis. Indeed, an excellent study in Japan has demonstrated that people with DMD live about 10 years longer when managed noninvasively than when having a tracheostomy tube. There are no comparable data for other conditions but since 4 out of 5 ALS TMV users die because of complications from their trach tubes and many CNVS users of over 60 years have not been hospitalized in over half a century, it is very likely that noninvasive management is safer than invasive management for almost all people with neuromuscular disease as well as for many debilitated elderly.
