Only muscles with greater than anti-gravity strength can get stronger with exercise. People needing to use ventilators generally do not have respiratory muscles with greater than anti-gravity strength. Therefore, exercise will not significantly increase respiratory muscle strength nor prevent episodes of respiratory failure which are generally caused by inability to cough effectively during colds rather than from ventilatory failure. Besides, children usually do not need to be told to exercise or be active.

Obviously, there are a lot of exercises to strength muscles published and illustrated online. These exercises can be also helpful in case you're obsessed.
