Why is a gastric tube better than a nasogastric (NG) tube?

Several of our 20 year old severe SMA1 children (CNVS dependent since 4 to 7 months of age) have been using NG tubes for over 20 years despite nasal CNVS dependence so the tube does not necessarily interfere with effective nasal CNVS. However, about one-half of our NG patients for over 15 years get repeated episodes of sinusitis. GTs can also get infected and have other problems. Also, while NG tubes are extremely uncomfortable when used acutely, our nasal CNVS patients who have them for 20 years don’t notice them at all.
