Decanulation from nursing home

Postby curiousgeorge » Mon Dec 07, 2015 1:45 am

I am a 23-year-old man with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Earlier this year, I suffered respiratory failure and was rushed to the hospital where I was given O2, stopped breathing, was intubated and then given a tracheotomy tube. I have been in a nursing home for the past 5 months. I found about noninvasive ventilation. Is there any way you would be able to help me get the tracheotomy tube removed and switch to noninvasive ventilation?

Unfortunately, this cannot be done while you are in a nursing home ventilator unit. The unit is paid $850/day for you to be there and it has no interest, no expertise, and no incentive to learn how to switch you from tracheostomy mechanical ventilation (TMV) to NVS and MIE. You would need to be discharged from the nursing home and come to a "Center for Noninvasive Respiratory Management" as an outpatient for us to teach you how to use NVS and MIE and then remove your tube.
