Vent vs Bipap

Postby mushyscag » Thu Jun 30, 2016 4:24 pm

Dear Dr. Bach

As you know Johnny uses the ventilator but I am having a hard time explaining to other DMD parents why a vent and not a Bipap. Can you explain what is the difference so I can explain properly.

Thanks,
Michelle

BiPAP stops you from exhaling completely. That is counter productive. The IPAP has to be increased to compensate for it. BiPAP doesn't work on batteries and you can not air stack with it so people using BiPAP have their lungs get smaller and smaller and tighter and tighter.

Thank you. I will direct them to your site so they can read it for themselves and then they can understand why the vent and NOT the BiPAP.
